New Website for Island Divers

A new organization that unites the diving industry in a completely different way. Current and past efforts to do so have resulted in slow, incomplete and sometimes lopsided efforts. BC Dive Community wants to be different. Membership is FREE, there is no committee that decides what is relevant and what is happening and all members have input.

Visit their website for more information.

S.D.O. Celebrates its 20th Anniversary!

Founded by two young university students, this organization went on to become what was really the first technical and scientific training agency in Canada. S.D.O. undertook projects that included wreck preservation and archeological studies, site clean-ups, film projects and underwater documentaries.

It's membership base grew to include specialists all across Canada and eventually the birth of it's newsletter 'The Diver's EcoWatch' which later became syndicated in diver magazines and TV shows as 'Technically Speaking' and 'The HangLine'.

Get the full story at the HangLine, edition #08-02.

Important Website for Commercial and Public Safety Divers

Taken from their website;

"The Diver Certification Board of Canada is a federally incorporated not-for-profit body which operates under the authority of a number of agreements with the National Energy Board, the Canada-Newfoundland Offshore Petroleum Board and the Canada-Nova Scotia Offshore Petroleum Board.

Originally set up to replace the offshore diver certification regime of the National Energy Board and the offshore petroleum boards, the Diver Certification Board of Canada is now the only national body which certifies offshore and inshore commercial divers in Canada.

The Diver Certification Board of Canada offers certification to commercial divers and supervisors who can demonstrate that they have sufficient training and experience to enable them to meet the competency requirements of the appropriate section of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Competency Standard for Diving Operations (CSA Standard Z275.4).  Certificates issued by theDCBC are recognised by Australia (ADAS), France, Norway, South Africa, the United Kingdom (HSE) and the International Diving Contractors Association (IMCA).

The Diver Certification Board of Canada accredits commercial diver training organizations which train to the competency levels described in CSA Standard Z275.4.  Accredited commercial diver training organizations can also assess the competency of experinced commercial divers who were not trained at an accredited school, provide training where necessary, and recommend the diver for certification."

SSI Tech Extended Range Program

Scuba Schools International launched their new technical or "Extended Range Program" at DEMA this month. This program appears to be the most effective, practical and complete technical diving program to hit the diver training scene in over 20 years. Comprehensive skills and academics combined with innovative teaching tools and diver accessories makes this one of the best programs available. Editor-in-chief and program coordinator Steve Newman explains that this program addresses the real world needs for divers looking to either get into extended range diving, or technical divers wishing to expand their abilities. What Newman did was approach a number of seasoned tehcnical Instructors and Instructor Trainers from around the world and a variety of other teaching agencies and asked what should be installed in a 'useable' technical program. The result is a screening of the best leaving behind old theory and practice that is no longer appopriate for technical applications. As of January 2007 Deep Fathoms will be offering TXR programs at both the diver and instructor levels.

Passing of Canadian Technical Diver

DFP was saddened to learn of the recent passing of Steve Schinke, Edmonton born technical diver and marine biologist. Steve enjoyed cave diving and many other forms of technical exploration. After working with the dolphin program at the West Edmonton Mall, Steve relocated to Bermuda and the dolphin program down there. Steve passed away earlier this month in New Zealand of health complications. Steve was well known to the gang at Deep Fathoms and will be greatly missed.
